... that today is the birthday of the Tootsie Roll? Leo
Hirschfield brought the recipe for Tootsie Rolls from his
native Austria. In 1896, he began making the candy bits, which
he named after his daughter Clara (whose nickname was
Tootsie), in his kitchen behind his candy store. He sold the
bits for a penny a piece. Celebrate by eating your favorite
sweet today!
